The question of how we use information technology to make our businesses more profitable and sustainable has been a question I have been asking for over 15 years. Indeed, this has been the central questions of my entire career.
How do we make tech really help us?
How do we make information technology really serve in the interests of people?
How do we use these digital tools to be more sustainable?
My journey to discover the answers to these questions, is the AGContext story. It is the reason I came into the profession of business analysis. It is the reason why my work and business sit in the intersection of business analysis, information technology and business sustainability.
If you haven’t heard, Business Analysis, it is the profession of making business systems work the way we want them too. My specialist field of business analysis is in the implementation and integration of financial and customer technology.
As a business analyst, I’m good at asking and answering questions about what is it that we want this information technology to do. And then following up with, how do we make it do it. This means understanding and taking action around making change happen in our businesses.
The IIBA is the peak body for professionals like me. It has played an important role in helping to formalize the Business Analysis profession. The IIBA offers a range of professional certifications, equivalent to those you would find in other people oriented roles such as Counsellors and Financial Advisors. This has played an important part in the business analyst becoming a respected role for information technology projects in large organisations.
I’ve always been playing around with information technology. I went and did a general science degree with a strong focus on information technology. My first career job was working as software project leader with the Victorian Department of Agriculture. Since then, I’ve worked in a whole range of projects focused around information technology and the specific information technology that I am specialize in is customer and financial management. Today I’m an experienced and certified IT business analyst.
And The focus of my work is using business analysis to get these digital tools to really sing to work for our business so that our business can sing. It’s about taking all the different technologies that we have and selecting which technologies the right technologies for us.
Once we’ve got the system, be it sales force, Microsoft dynamics, Hubspot or any other tool, we need to do the work to get the best out of them. This is the focus of my work. The combination of business analysis and information technology go hand in hand because that is that is really about. That’s where the two skill sets come together.
I also have a deep passion around business sustainability. And for me the big problems in the world this is how I connect my business and what I do to the big picture.
Think Global, Act Local!
My version of Act Local is helping people in business to fix their business systems. This is the intersection of business analysis and information technology.
The global part of it comes from my passion for business sustainability. Indeed, this was my subject of study in my Master in Sustainable Practice which I was awarded from RMIT with Distinction back in 2010..
Our current environmental problems such as waste management, water management and the biggest of them all, climate change, all come from the cumulation of wastes from our collective business systems. Every business in some way, no matter how small is contributing to the human destruction of our planet. If this is to change, then we need to change the way our business systems work.
This requires us to use information technology better, and to do that we need to understand our business better. And thus, we need business analysis, information technology and business sustainability to come together. This is my purpose for AGContext.
If we’re going to use information technology to do ours to make better businesses that better serve our customers and better serve our employees, then let’s also make our businesses more sustainable in the process. If we’re making these changes anyway, we should do so, in ways that benefits profit, people and planet all at once.
We when design our systems for the triple bottom line from the get go, we can make huge steps forward in sustainable practice, without any extra incurred costs. Sustainability and profitability in business go hand in hand, so long as we have the right mindset from the start. This is because when our business is better for the planet, it is also better for people. This means happier employees, happier customers and happier purpose. It’s a win-win-win.
