DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS AND SERVICES

WHAT ARE DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS AND SERVICES?

Decision Support Systems (DSS) or better yet, Decision Support Systems and Services (DSS&S) address the many complex issues involved in modern day management. They are increasingly important for informing decision makers about how their world is working. Today, very few major and strategic decisions are made without the help of some form of decision support system or service.

Simply put, it is:

“A set of related systems and services that inform a decision maker of factors relevant to their decision. It brings greater insight, to enable better analysis and decision making within an organisation.”

HOW THEY CAN HELP YOU

Decision Support Systems and Services should be integral to any new large project you are undertaking.

Putting in place appropriate systems and services will help you manage the complex environments you face. It will even make the process of obtaining information far smoother, whilst creating clarity in understanding that information.

Additionally, it will give you greater control within your organisation by supporting the identification of redundant business processes and giving you a firmer grasp of key performance indicators.

All resulting in the ability to make better decisions with more confidence.

COMPONENTS OF DECISION SUPPORT

Decision support is made up of two broad components:

  1. SYSTEMS: Computer-based systems that deliver information to a decision maker. This can be GIS, the cloud, big data, your company CRM or any other system that collects, stores, analyses and presents information.
  2. SERVICES: The people who manage, provide access to, or interpret the output of any of the systems highlighted above. In essence, the people who manage them and those that use them, including any relevant documentation and support services they use.

Both are required for the delivery of effective decision support. Many organisations will set up their decision support systems and overlook properly implementing the services to support them. In fact, the primary reason that decision support systems become irrelevant is because the services they require weren’t properly implemented.

DO YOU NEED DECISION SUPPORT?

If you are a senior decision maker, or you are undertaking a large project, and you need to understand, manage and respond to an increasingly demanding and complex operational environment, implementing proper Decision Support Systems and Services can help you.
